Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-kəw (body; chest; thorax; corpse). Cognate with Yao'an Lolopo ggechir (body), Tangut 𘓷 (*kwər¹, body), Tibetan སྐུ (sku, body), Old Chinese (OC *kʰo), Drung vnggeu (body), shigeu (corpse) (STEDT).

The pronoun sense is a semantic extension of the "body" sense, via "body" > "one's own body" > "oneself" (STEDT: kuiy "one's self").
