editFrom Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-kawŋ (“hollow, hollow object, head”); cognate with Lahu [script needed] (qo¹¹, “cave, hole”). Said Tibeto-Burman root is allofamically related to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(g/k)uŋ (“hole; orifice; inner part”), whence Old Chinese 空 (OC *kʰoːŋ, *kʰoːŋs, “empty; space”); see there for more cognates (STEDT).
