Etymology 1

From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *(s/ʔ)-nam² (sesame), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-nam (idem); cognate with Akha [script needed] (nm̀, idem) (STEDT). Note also Proto-Hmong *hnaŋᴮ (perilla), whence White Hmong hnav (perilla, sesame).
