Etymology 1

Inherited from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *pu (pumpkin, gourd). Cognate with Akha phù (gourd), as well as, outside of Lolo-Burmese, Old Chinese (OC *bruː, “gourd”), (OC *bew, “gourd; dried gourd ladle”) (STEDT).

The "container" sense, though not linked to the "gourd" sense by STEDT (bu⁵⁵ "box / case"), appears to be derived from the "gourd" sense, as hollowed-out gourds can be used as containers and cases.
