Etymology

edit

Probably from a Proto-Lolo-Burmese *way (to buy), with further derivation unclear (STEDT). Perhaps from the same word family as Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g/m/s-laj ~ r/s-lej ~ b-rej (to exchange, buy) (whence Old Chinese (OC *lal, “to change places”), (OC *leːɡs, *leɡ, “to exchange”)); the latter Sino-Tibetan root is known for variable prefixes and -ay/-ey vocalism.
