Etymology

edit

Cognate with Lhao Vo laudao: (news).

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (tθɑ⁵³ tĩ⁵⁵ "news / message"), and MED considers this an atomic word. Luce mentions a word, romanized as "sataṅ:", with meaning "piety, purity, fast day", and compares it to Old Chinese (OC *hljeŋs, “holy”).[1] Is this the same in Burmese spelling as the "news" sense? If so, perhaps semantic shift "pure day" > "the goings-on around the pure days" > "news"?”
