Particularly: “Apparently a compound of သား (sa:, “son”) + a syllable မီး (mi:) which denotes feminine qualities. The bilabial nasal "m" is associated with words for females in many languages across language families, including English mother and Welsh merch (“girl, maiden”), and Sino-Tibetan is no exception; see also အစ်မ (acma., “elder sister”).”
