Believed to be from Pali haribhuñjeyya (literally “consumable by Hari”), from hari (“Hari”, a name of the Hindu god Viṣṇu) + bhuñjjeyya (“consumable; edible”). Cognate with Thai หริภุญชัย (hà-rí-pun-chai).
