From წ(ვ)- (ǯ(v)-) +‎ -უფ (-up) +‎ -ს (-s). Inherited from Proto-Georgian-Zan *c̣ow- (to suck). Cognate with Georgian წოვა (c̣ova) and Mingrelian წუალა (c̣uala).
