ᚨᛚᛃᚨᛗᚨᚱᚲᛁᛉ

Proto-Norse

edit

Etymology

edit

ᚨᛚᛃᚨ- (alja-, foreign) +‎ *ᛗᚨᚱᚲᚢ (*marku, forest, woodland; borderland, marches) +‎ -ᛁᛉ (-iʀ, -ed, forms adjectives from nouns).

Adjective

edit

ᚨᛚᛃᚨᛗᚨᚱᚲᛁᛉ (aljamarkiʀ)

  1. of a foreign (border)land (possibly nominalised as a proper noun)

Usage notes

edit
  • This word may also be read as the genitive singular of *ᛗᚨᚱᚲᚢ (*marku), for which compare Old Norse mǫrk with attested genitive singular merkr. The reading as a (possibly nominalised) adjective is based on typology and comparison with ᚷᛚᛇᚨᚢᚷᛁᛉ (glïaugiʀ, gleaming-eyed) and ᚢᚾᚷᚨᚾᛞᛁᛉ (ungandiʀ, un-enchanted, not afflicted by sorcery) where -ᛁᛉ (-iʀ) is clearly a suffix, not a case ending.
