ᚹᛟᛞᚢᚱᛁᛞᛖ
Proto-Norse
editEtymology
editDative of *ᚹᛟᛞᚢᚱᛁᛞᚨᛉ (*woduridaʀ /Wōdurīdaʀ/). Compound of *ᚹᛟᛞᚢᛉ (*woduʀ /wōduʀ/, “fury”) + *ᚱᛁᛞᚨᛉ (*ridaʀ /rīdaʀ/, “rider”). First element from Proto-Germanic *wōduz. Second element ultimately from Proto-Germanic *rīdaną (“to ride”).
The a-stem dative singular -ᛖ (-e /-ē/) comes from Proto-Germanic *-ai, with regular Northwest Germanic sound shift of *-ai > -ē (> Old Norse -i).
