From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɣɔːᴬ² (neck), from Proto-Tai *ɣoːᴬ (neck), from Middle Chinese (MC huw, “larynx; throat”). Cognate with Thai คอ (kɔɔ), Northern Thai ᨤᩬᩴ, Khün ᨤᩳ, Lao ຄໍ (khǭ), Tai Dam ꪁꪷ, Shan ၶေႃး (kháu), Phake ၵေႃ (khō), Ahom 𑜁𑜦𑜡 (khō) or 𑜁𑜞𑜦𑜡 (khrō), Zhuang hoz, Saek กฺ๊อ.
