From Proto-Southwestern Tai *tawᴮ¹ (turtle), from Proto-Tai *tawᴮ (turtle). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨲᩮᩢ᩵ᩣ (tao), Lao ເຕົ່າ (tao), ᦎᧁᧈ (ṫaw¹), Shan တဝ်ႇ (tào), Thai เต่า (dtào), Ahom 𑜄𑜧 (taw). Compare Proto-Be *ɗuːᴮꟲ¹.
