Proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruboid *ɛ́-kʊ̃̀, equivalent to ẹ- (“agent prefix”) + kùn (“to growl, grumble”), literally “That which growls”. Cognate with Igala ẹ́kọ̀, Igbo agụ
