Etymology edit

Uncertain. Perhaps cognate with Sanskrit वेविज (vevija, quick), यात् (yāt, moving), वेविज्यते (vevijyate, to flee from), though Beekes calls this "formally impossible" because of the long -ī-. Possibly instead related to αἰόλος (aiólos, swift, nimble, quick).

Pronunciation edit

Verb edit

ᾱ̓ΐσσω (āḯssō)

  1. (intransitive) to move quickly, dart, shoot
  2. (intransitive) to be eager for with the prepositions εἰς (eis), ἐπί (epí), or πρός (prós) governing the accusative
