Etymology edit

Unknown. Apparently equivalent to Ancient Greek κάπρος (kápros, “wild (boar)”).(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)

Only attested as a hapax in Hesychius:
- 5th century CE, Hesychius Alexandreus, Συναγωγὴ Πασῶν Λέξεων κατὰ Στοιχεῖον Α:
  ἀλίη· κάπρος. Μακεδόνες
  alíē; kápros. Makedónes
  alíē: wild (boar), according to the Macedonians
It is unclear whether we are dealing with a noun or an adjective, since κάπρος (kápros) sometimes appears to modify other nouns, for example:
- 800 BCE – 600 BCE, Homer, Iliad 7.256–257:
  λείουσιν ἐοικότες ὠμοφάγοισιν / ἢ συσὶ κάπροισιν
  leíousin eoikótes ōmophágoisin / ḕ susì káproisin
