Etymology

edit

The assertion that ἀ- in this verb is secondary has no basis. Rather the form without it will be secondary. From Proto-Indo-European *sperH- (to kick) together with Latin spernō (to despise), Sanskrit स्फुरति (sphurati, to spurn), Proto-Germanic *spurnaną (to kick, trample).
