Etymology edit

From ⲡ- (p-) + Demotic jpt (inner sanctum of a temple), having become masculine in Coptic times. The form without article ⲁⲡⲉ (ape) is the earlier usage. Compare Ancient Greek Θῆβαι (Thêbai) and Ancient Greek Ωφις (Ōphis, Aba al-Waqf, a village in Middle Egypt).
