From 灯台(とうだい) (tōdai, lighthouse) + 躑躅(つつじ) (tsutsuji, rhododendron; azalea). Over time, the tōdai became dōdan. The kanji are jukujikun (熟字訓), from Chinese 滿天星满天星 (mǎntiānxīng, baby's breath, Gypsophila paniculata).
