Particularly: “The NKD entry traces this to itibi + ko instead, which is reasonable considering the superficial similarities between the ichibi plant and the various things called ichigo over history.”

The kanji spelling is an orthographic borrowing from Middle Chinese 蓬虆 (buŋ liuɪ).

	A user suggests that this Old Japanese entry be cleaned up, giving the reason: “This cannot mean "strawberry" since that plant was only imported to Japan during the Edo period.”
