From Proto-Karen *sejᴬ (dead, to die) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *si⁴ (idem) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *səj (to die). Cognate with Pa'o Karen သီ, S'gaw Karen သံ (thee), Western Pwo ၥံၫ.
