editFrom Proto-Sino-Tibetan *sjam (“iron”). Cognate with Old Chinese 銛 (OC *koːd, *slem, *l̥ʰeːmʔ, “sharp; spade, hoe, other sharp tools”) (STEDT), as well as 鐕 (OC *ʔsluːm, “headless nail”).[1]
