Korean edit

Etymology edit

갱치 (gaengchi) +‎ 없다 (eopda, to not have). The first component could potentially be from a dialectal form of 경치(景致) (gyeongchi) meaning scenery or view. Hence, the literal meaning could plausibly be 'to lack scenery' or 'to lack a view', in a negative sense.

Adjective edit

갱치없다 (gaengchieopda) (infinitive 갱치없어, sequential 갱치없으니)

  1. (Jagang Pyongan) to be untidy, messy
    • 2011 March 18, 정유나 [jeong'yuna], “갱치없다????????? [gaengchieopda?????????]”, in 정유나 One Korea [jeong'yuna One Korea]‎[1], 자강도 전천군 [jagangdo jeoncheon'gun]:
      이렇게 아이 갱치가 없니.
      Neo waeireoke ai-re gaengchiga eomni.
      Why are you so untidy.

Usage notes edit

  • While the adjective appears to also be commonly said as ‘갱치가 없다', speakers of the Pyongan dialect appear to view it as its own adjective in the form of '갱치없다'.
