Etymology edit

First attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean 그치〮다〮 (Yale: kùchí-tá), originally the causative with (-i-) of the intransitive verb 긏다〮 (Yale: kùch-tá, “to come to a stop”). The causative later replaced the original verb.
