Etymology edit

Likely from Middle Korean ᄇᆞᆰ다 (polkta, to be red) + (-ang, sequential suffix) + ᄒᆞ다〮 (Yale: hota, light verb whence modern ᄒᆞ다 (hawda)). Compare Jeju ᄇᆞᆰ다 (bawkda, to be bright). Cognate with Korean 발갛다 (balgata).
