Etymology

edit

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 바ᇰ〯긔〮 (Yale: pǎngkúy).

Nativisation of the Sino-Korean term 방기 (放氣, banggi, “releasing gas”). Possibly influenced by 뀌— (kkwi-, to break, to release (wind)).

Pronunciation

edit
  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈpa̠(ː)ŋɡɥi] ~ [ˈpa̠(ː)ŋɡy]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
