First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 숨기다 (Yale: swumkita). From 숨— (sum-, to hide, intransitive) + —기— (gi-, causative suffix) + —다 (da, verb ending).
