Korean

Etymology

edit

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 올〮히 (Yale: wólhì). The dialectal evidence suggests that Old Korean had /k/ instead of /h/; compare Gyeongsang Korean 올기 (olgi) and 올개이 (olgaei).

Pronunciation

edit
  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈo̞(ː)ɾi]
    • Audio:(file)
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
