Etymology edit

Perhaps an ancient Mesopotamian Wanderwort. Some scholars have seen this word as part of the Euphratic substrate hypothesis, which connects it to Proto-Indo-European *h₂éǵros (field). Compare also Akkadian 𒀀𒃼 (ugārum) and Ugaritic 𐎜𐎂𐎗 (ủgr).

Noun edit

𒀀𒃼 (a-gar₃ /agar/)

  1. field, arable land, irrigation district
  2. meadow

Descendants edit

  • ? Akkadian: 𒀀𒃼 (ugārum) (the direction of the borrowing might be the opposite)
