Etymology edit

Uncertain, but probably inherited. Possibly related to Ancient Greek แผ€ฮผฮฑฯ…ฯฯŒฯ‚ (amaurรณs, โ€œdarkโ€), Latin umbra (โ€œshadow, shadeโ€). However, Kloekhorst connect this and related Hittite words to Proto-Indo-European *mergสท- (โ€œto flicker; to darkenโ€). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)

Noun edit

*๐’ˆ ๐’…ˆ๐’‰ฟ๐’‹ป (*ma-ar-wa-tar /marwatar/) (nominative-accusative singular)

  1. blackness

Usage notes edit

  • Only the dative-locative singular is attested.
