editFrom Proto-Anatolian *sógn̥, cognate with Luwian 𒋫𒀀𒅔 (ta-a-in, “oil”), ultimately of uncertain origin, but perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *seg-, whence Sanskrit सजति (sájati, “to cling to”), Lithuanian sègti (“to fasten to”). Related to 𒅖𒆠𒄑𒍣 (iš-ki-ez-zi /iškiyezi/, “to smear, anoint (with oil)”), from Proto-Anatolian *sgyéti
