First attested in 1705. From the -ir ending of German -ieren (verb-forming suffix) + -oz.[1]

  1. (verb-forming suffix) Mainly added to loanwords to naturalize them in Hungarian. Partially productive.
    kandíroz (to candy)

Usage notes edit

  • (verb-forming suffix) Harmonic variants:
    -íroz is added to back vowel words
    -éroz is added to front vowel words
