Russian edit

Etymology edit

Originally from -ик (-ik) added to adjectives ending in -евый (-evyj) or -ево́й (-evój); later extracted out as its own suffix.

Pronunciation edit

  • -евик: IPA(key): [ʲɪvʲɪk]
  • -еви́к: IPA(key): [ʲɪˈvʲik]

Suffix edit

-евик or -еви́к (-evik or -evíkm inan or m anim

  1. Alternative form of -овик (-ovik) (used after palatalized or formerly palatalized consonants)
бо́льше (bólʹše, bigger) + ‎-еви́к (-evík) → ‎большеви́к (bolʹševík, Bolshevik, literally someone in the majority)
борщ (boršč, (originally) hogweed) + ‎-еви́к (-evík) → ‎борщеви́к (borščevík, hogweed)
    змея́ (zmejá, snake) + ‎-еви́к (-evík) → ‎змееви́к (zmejevík, serpentine) (geology)

Usage notes edit

  • For many, perhaps most, nouns ending in -евик (-evik), the base noun has a corresponding relational adjective in -евый (-evyj) or

-ево́й (-evój), in which case an analysis of the noun as formed from the relational adjective + -ик (-ik) is still possible, and in same cases preferred.

  • As with -ик (-ik), the suffix may be stressed, in which case it is in accent pattern b (always ending-stressed).
