Etymology edit
Inherited from (sense 1) Latin -iēbāmus and (sense 2) Latin -eāmus, with both elements containing -āmus is replaced with Frankish *-ōmēs (see more at -ons). In Old French, the paradigms of an -īre verb alongside in the sense 1, was also supplied to the subjunctive imperfect paradigms of -āre verbs: -asse, -asses, -ast, -issons, -issoiz, -assent.
