Etymology
editFirst attested as arlederuene in 1214. Compound of the hydronym Aar (for which see Ter Aar), Middle Dutch lede (“excavated or canalised watercourse”) and vene (“peat bog, marsh”). The second element was gradually reinterpreted to land (“land”).
