Etymology edit

Potentially attested as ascet in 1302, attested with certainty as AFSCHED of Asched, ook wel Afzet in 1839. If the oldest attestations refer to the current settlement, the toponym is a derivation from Old Dutch askethe (ash (Fraxinus excelsior) forest).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˈɑf.sxɛt/
  • Hyphenation: Af‧sched
