First attested as to anken in 1381-1383. Etymology unknown. Not derived from a term related to Middle Dutch eng (“farmland next to a village”), a compound of a personal name and heem (“home, settlement”) or dialectal ank (“pool, kolk lake”). The toponym bears a passing resemblance to Old High German anko (“salve, grease, butter”); the significance (if any) of this resemblance is unknown.
