Gikun word derived by applying Chinese-derived spelling 服従 (“submission”), a term which decomposes into 服 (“obey/conform”) + 従 (“conform to rule”), to native Japanese verb したがう (shitaga.u, “subdue”).

※ 服 literally means dress with clothes conforming to the shape of the body, and has the related meaning of obey/conform.　This is reminiscent of Genesis 2:15 where it is said that God put man in the garden of Eden to "dress it and to keep it." (KJV)
