analytic philosophy
A style of philosophy that came to dominate English-speaking countries in the 20th century.
continental philosophy
A collective term for various philosophical traditions strongly influenced by certain 19th and 20th century philosophers from mainland Europe, such as Hegel.
epistemology
The branch of philosophy dealing with the study of knowledge; theory of knowledge.
ethics
The study of principles relating to right and wrong conduct.
logic
The study of the principles and criteria of valid inference and demonstration.
metaphysics
The branch of philosophy which studies fundamental principles intended to describe or explain all that is, and which are not themselves explained by anything more fundamental; the study of first principles; the study of being insofar as it is being (ens in quantum ens).
ontology
The branch of metaphysics that addresses the nature or essential characteristics of being and of things that exist; the study of being qua being.
particular
A particular thing.
philosophy of science
The study of the assumptions, foundations, and implications of science.
universal
A characteristic or property that particular things have in common.
