Sindarin

Etymology

edit

Modified from lûg (‘snake’) and ulug (‘dragon’) in Tolkien’s earlier conception of the language (‘Gnomish’). Diegetically explained as inherited from Primitive Elvish *slōkō, and so cognate to Quenya hlócë; however, the latter shows irregular development in its final vowel, instead suggesting Primitive Elvish *slōkī.

Noun

edit

lhûg • m~Mx (plural lhuig)

  1. reptile in general, crawling creature, worm (in the archaic sense)
    1. snake, serpent
      Synonym: lŷg
