Categorization

edit

It seems that this page and perhaps all the sub-pages should be converted to a category. Then they would automatically update. Does someone with more experience than me know how to do that efficiently? Rossami 03:13, 28 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

In the year since you posed the question, it looks like someone has done exactly that. These lists are still quite useful on their own, however, as a good way of preventing/mitigating the various category mistakes/vandalism problems. --Connel MacKenzie 00:56, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Pet names?

edit

Well, I don't recall it being discussed, but someone has added "Pet names." I suppose "Fictional character names" is next? --Connel MacKenzie 00:56, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am sorry that I started this category with discussion first. It still can be discussed. Fictional characters' names? Those names are also given names, aren't they? Kind regards, --Alasdair 09:16, 8 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Categorising by origin?

edit

Could we put a separate system in alongside the existing one, which would be organised by the name's origin? For example, male given names from France, surnames from Russia, etc. Blast 20:37, 20 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

How many?

edit

Is there a way of obtaining a count of how many surnames are included here? --Ceyockey 10:12, 27 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

No, there is no simple way to obtain a count. Yesterday, 8th August 2009 I concatenate all the letters and I count them all. The result is: 22,130 surnames (A-Z). The count of female given names (A-Z) is: 17,688. The count for male given names (A-Z): 30,193. Regards, --Alasdair 13:44, 9 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

An error might have been occurred

edit

When I try to enter the J section I get a screen with the text:

Override this function.

And I have no access to this section anymore. Is there an error occurred?

Thank you, --Alasdair 09:17, 8 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well, problem is solved. I have access to the section J again. Thank you.

A fine correction

edit

The present version looks fine to me. --Alasdair 14:26, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Regarding Persian given names that I've seen in these lists so far...

edit

What is the source of these given names? Most Persian surnames are just compound of a given name and the suffix -i, but of course not every surname which ends in an "i" is such compound. and in these lists I've seen many words listed as given name which are not even a valid word, obviously someone has seen their corresponding surnames somewhere and has assumed that by removing the -i it will become a given name. --Z 00:38, 25 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

My source is Persian/Iran movies, television and news articles concerning Iran people. My knowledge about Iran names is poor. Nevertheless I notice that quite a lot Iran surnames contain Iran given or first names. So I gather all the Iran names in this appendix. Later on I will delete the incorrect ones. Maybe you will help me with deleting the incorrect names? I would very appreciate it. --Alasdair 01:40, 25 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sure, I'm interested in these appendices, too. --Z 15:03, 25 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Return to "Names" page.
