From Old Norse Atli, from late Proto-Germanic *Attilô, diminutive of *attô (father). See Attila. Cognate with Faroese and Icelandic Atli.

As a given name also from atall (fierce) as a heiti for the god Thor, and a short form of names beginning with Atl- (e.g. Atlak, a variant of Aslak).
