From Proto-West Germanic *Balþawini, equivalent to Old English bald (brave) + wine (friend). Cognate with English Baldwin, French Baudouin, and Dutch Boudewijn. Displaced by the Norman ancestor of modern English Baldwin in the late 11th century.
