Etymology edit

First attested as berlichem in 1355. Derived from a compound of Old Frisian Berilo (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and hēm (home, settlement). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name.
