Etymology edit
First attested as berlichem in 1355. Derived from a compound of Old Frisian Berilo (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and hēm (“home, settlement”). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name.
