First attested as Bernsera gued in 1506. Borrowed from West Frisian Barnsterbuorren, derived from a compound of an otherwise unknown toponym Beerns or Berns and the plural form of buer (“house, cottage”). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name.
