boreo- (northern) +‎ Latin pelta f (pelta, small shield), so called because it was found in central Siberia.

  1. A taxonomic genus within the family Rhytidosteidae – an extinct genus of rhytidosteid temnospondyl of the Olenekian, found as a skull and jaw fossil in central Siberia. The only species is Boreopelta vavilovi.

Not to be confused with another fossil taxon, Borealopelta, of similar etymology.
