Etymology

First attested as borglo in 960. Potentially a compound of Dutch borg (fortified settlement, castle) and lo (light forest). An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from Proto-Germanic *burgôn (type of tree). Compare Borculo, Borkel en Schaft, Bulkenaar, Schipborg and Westerbork.
