Etymology

edit

Definite form; from Old Norse *Bygðir, from bugr (bend), thus meaning the bent one. Compare the nearby lake Gjende, meaning the straight one, from gandr (staff).

Pronunciation

edit

Proper noun

edit

Bygdin m

  1. A lake in Vang, Valdres district, Oppland, Norway

Usage notes

edit

The form Bygdin is traditionally used in Valdres and on modern maps, while the same lake is referred to by the indefinite form Bygde in Vågå. One of the reasons why lake is so known there that it got a separate name is because the lake was often used by people from Vågå.

Derived terms

Compounds with Bygdin use the indefinite genitive Bygdis-.
