Etymology

edit

The second element, -ingham, is ultimately from Old English -ing + hām (home). The first element, Cold, is either from an unattested Old English given name, *Colud, or from hypothetical Proto-Celtic *kolout- (hill). Old English forms also include Old English Coludesburh, from the genitive of the same first element + burh (town, fortress).
