New Latin, from Ancient Greek κρυπτός (kruptós, hidden, secret) +‎ κόκκος (kókkos, grain, seed).

  1. Principally soil-dwelling yeast fungi, but certain species cause cryptococcosis or meningitis in mammals including humans:
    1. A taxonomic genus within the family Tremellaceae.
    2. A taxonomic genus within the family Cryptococcaceae.
  2. A taxonomic genus within the family Eriococcidae – certain scale insects, soft scales, some of which are pests in agriculture.
